Sage Northcutt was one of a number of major signings made by the ONE FC promotion from the UFC in recent times, but the young star’s debut proved to be a complete disaster yesterday in Singapore.
The 23-year-old Northcutt, who had been coming off a three-fight winning streak in the UFC, wasn’t given an easy fight for his first outing in the ONE FC ring, instead being put up against Cosmo Alexandre, a vastly experienced former kickboxing world champion who had a 7-1 MMA record heading into the contest.
Early in the opening round, Alexandre landed cleanly with a powerful right hook and after a delayed reaction for a second, it sent Northcutt falling face-first onto the mat unconscious, with another blow to the temple landing on his way down for a stunning knockout just 29 seconds into the fight.
Northcutt isn’t the only high-profile acquisition by ONE FC that hasn’t paid off so far as it was only a few months ago that Eddie Alvarez joined their ranks, only to be KO’d in the first round of his debut by Timofey Nastyukhin.
‘Super’ Sage wasn’t the only well known star who suffered a big loss last night though, as ligtweight champion Shinya Aoki was TKO’d in the second round by Christian Lee.
