Two former light-heavyweight title contenders Alexander Gustafsson and Glover Teixeira are set to clash in the main event of an upcoming UFC Fight Night event in Stockholm, Sweden on May 28th.
This isn’t the first time the promotion have attempted to match the two up together, with the fight having originally been set for UFC Fight Night 69 in June of 2015, but a back injury forced ‘The Mauler’ to pull out.
Instead Gustafsson would head into a hard-fought title fight with Daniel Cormier a few months later at UFC 192, coming extremely close to winning the belt, but ultimately losing by split decision.
Gustafsson took almost a full year out after that, but did rack up a confidence-boosting decision win over Yan Blachowicz in September of last year, leaving him ranked No.2 in the division.
Teixeira has been more active than Gustafsson over the same period, fighting a total of five times, beginning with a three fight winning streak against Ovince St. Preux, Patrick Cummins and Rashad Evans.
He then suffered a 13 second knockout loss to Anthony Johnson – the first time he’d been finished in 14 years, but has since rebounded with a decision win over Jared Cannonier at UFC 208 earlier this month, which secured his position at No.3 in the rankings.
At this stage the fight has yet to be officially confirmed, and is the only bout attached to the Swedish show, which will mark the fifth time the UFC has brought the Octagon to Stockholm.
