A major featherweight fight between Jose Aldo and Alex Volkanovski has been added to the UFC 237 card in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on May 11th.
Former long-time 145lb champion Aldo is currently the division’s No.1 contender after recent TKO victories over Jeremy Stephens and Renato Moicano.
Normally that may have been enough to earn him a title shot, but the Brazilian star had suffered back-to-back losses against current champion Max Holloway prior to that, and so he’s going to have to go the extra mile this time around if he’s to have any hope of securing a trilogy fight with ‘Blessed.’
In fact, this could be the last chance saloon for him to do so as he’s already indicated his intention to end his career by the end of the year after fighting out the remaining two bouts on his current UFC deal.
In Volkanovski he faces one of the division’s fastest rising talent’s, with the Australian having so far compiled a 6-fight unbeaten stretch in the UFC, and by the time the fight comes around it’ll have been six years since he last tasted defeat, with his current career record standing at 19-1.
Volkanovski defeated Chad Mendes by TKO last time out and as such is currently ranked No.4 in the division.
Aldo Vs Volkanovski joins a UFC 237 card that will be headlined by a strawweight title fight between Rose Namajunas and Jessica Andrade, while Anderson Silva fights Jared Cannonier elsewhere on the main card.
