As if Max Holloway didn’t have a big enough challenge ahead of him after accepting a lightweight title fight with dominant contender Khabib Nurmagomedov on just 6 days notice, it turns out that featherweight champion Max Holloway also has a major battle ahead of him just to make weight.
Holloway’s camp got in touch with nutrition expert George Lockhart before accepting the fight and after examining all the data he and his team (who also oversee the weight cut of the likes of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Joanna Jedrzejczyk) decided that it was possible, but it appears to be pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in such a short space of time.
“this is literally tied with the biggest cut I’ve ever done. It’s the exact same number as the biggest cut that I’ve ever done in my life,” Lockhart told Bloodyelbow.
Lockhart has made Holloway aware of the challenge that lies ahead of him, but he’s convinced that the star has what it takes to do it.
“We’re going to be asking you to do things that your body is not going to want to do,” Lockhart says he told ‘Blessed.’
“We’re going to put him in a keto state, and when you’re in a keto state the last thing you want to do is go run for an hour, because you’re depleted. He’s going to get off the plane, put his shorts on, and start running. I know he’s got the right mindset. Max is the one guy that can do that.”
