Recently Conor McGregor has told the boxing media in no uncertain terms that he’s coming to take over their sport, while UFC president Dana White has warmed up to the idea of his biggest star competing in the squared circle, but what does Floyd Mayweather think about their comments?
“I feel like he’s entitled to feel the way he wants to feel,” Mayweather told Fight Hype when asked about McGregor’s prediction that he’d knock him out. “Only thing you can do is respect that.”
Mayweather also seems happy with the fact that White is no longer as dismissive about the fight as he once was and is now predicting that the fight will happen.
“I just want to say, Dana White, I was overseas when they told me what you said. I wanna say, good work Dana White. Conor McGregor, they said you finally opened your mouth and you’re back to talking s*** and I say that’s cool too.”
So, for the time being at least, it appears as if Mayweather is opting not to go toe-to-toe with McGregor in a public war of words.
“With me, it is what it is. If I can’t do nothing, everybody knows I can fight, if I can’t do nothing else. But when I’m not in the ring, I’m a gentleman. Outside the ring, I’m a gentleman.”
That being said, Mayweather is keen to stress that he is the man in charge when it comes to deciding whether the mega-fight will go ahead or not.
“It’s about what I say. It’s whatever I say. Like I’ve said before, it is what it is. If it happens, it happens. We’ll just see.”
McGregor has a knack for getting under his opponent’s skins though, so it’ll be interesting to see whether Mayweather will be able to keep his cool if and when a fight between the two does eventually happen.
