A fight between Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua and Ihor Potieria has been booked for UFC 283 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on January 21st.
The 40-year-old Shogun had previously hinted that his next fight could well be his last and there was talk recently that there was a chance that the UFC could bring back free-agent Lyoto Machida for a trilogy fight between the two veterans, but that hasn’t materialized.
Instead Shogun faces a relatively new fighter in Potieria, who hails from Ukraine and suffered a second round TKO loss in his UFC debut back in July, leaving the 26-year-old with an overall career record of 18-3.
As for Shogun, he’ll be hoping to end his career on a win after suffering back-to-back losses against Paul Craig and Ovince Saint Preux over the last few years.
However, the Brazilian star had put up a 5-1-1 stint in the five years before that, leaving him with an overall UFC run of 11-11-1, which includes holding the UFC light-heavyweight title all the way back in 2010.
Shogun vs. Potieria joins a UFC 283 card that will also feature a fourth flyweight title encounter between Deiveson Figueiredo and Brandon Moreno and a middleweight fight between Gregory Rodrigues and Brad Tavares.
