Four years since his last fight, the now 48-year-old Mark Hunt returned to action last night for a fight with the unbeaten Sonny Bill Williams in a boxing match, and ‘The Super Samoan’ delivered an upset win as he demonstrated that he’s still as deadly as ever when he lets his heavy hands fly.
The 37-year-old Williams is already a legendary figure in New Zealand as a former decorated rugby league and rugby union player, and has since turned his hand to professional boxing, where he’d amassed a 9-0 record and won the WBA International heavyweight title along the way prior to last night’s showdown with ex-UFC star Hunt.
However, despite being a major underdog who was over 10 years older than his opponent, Hunt showed he’s still got it as he stayed in the fight up until the fourth round, at which point he sent Williams mouthpiece flying with an overhand right and then floored him with a hard left hook.
Williams made it back to his feet before the end of the 10-count and got more than a few extra seconds to recover while his mouthpiece was retrieved and cleaned, but even that was not enough to prepare him for what was to come as Hunt went in for the kill upon the restart, landing a thunderous right hand followed by more heavy blows that forced the referee to step in and wave off the fight.
Afterwards Hunt declared that this memorable upset victory would be the final fight of his storied career, while Williams also suggested that the TKO loss may well signal that it’s time for him to retire too.
