An immediate rematch of the flyweight title fight between newly crowned champion Alexa Grasso and Valentina Shevchenko is in the works according to Dana White.
“We’re working on that, too,” White confirmed at the weekend after UFC Fight Night 224. “That’s one of the fights we’re definitely working on right now.”
The 29-year-old Grasso delivered a major upset against long-time champion Shevchenko at UFC 285 in March when she pounced on a fourth-round submission finish to end ‘Bullet’s’ reign at 125lbs after seven successful defenses of the belt.
For Grasso it was her fifth win in a row since what’s proven to be a wise decision to move up to flyweight from strawweight, where she had only mustered a 3-3 run.
Though she was initially considered undersized for her new weight class, Grasso at last lived up to her full potential at flyweight, beating the likes of Maycee Barber, Joanne Wood and Viviane Araujo on her way to winning the belt.
Still, the 35-year-old Shevchenko made it clear after her loss to Grasso that she wanted a rematch, and knowing that she was 29-28 on all three judges scorecards heading into that ill-fated fourth round she’ll believe that she has a good chance to avenge the defeat, though at this stage we still don’t know exactly when and where the rematch will take place.
