Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman will finally make his return to action after a long time on the sidelines following a leg break in the Octagon when he takes on Brad Tavares at UFC 292 on August 19th.
Weidman had suffered a sickening leg break just 17 seconds into his fight with Uriah Hall at UFC 261 back in April of 2021 and that’s led to more than two years out of action, during which time he had two separate surgeries on his leg and then a long rehab period afterwards.
Now 38-years-old, Weidman actually returned to competitive action in March when he had a grappling match with ADCC veteran Owen Livesey at Polaris 23, which he lost by decision.
Prior to his leg break TKO loss to Hall in the Octagon, Weidman had been coming off a decision win against Omar Akhmedov, which had seemed at the time to be a desperately needed lifeline for the star as he’d lost five of his previous six fights before that via either KO or TKO.
Now he faces a fellow middleweight veteran in the 35-year-old Tavares who is coming off back-to-back losses, starting with a decision loss to Dricus du Plessis last July, followed by a TKO defeat against Bruno Silva back in April.
Weidman vs. Tavares joins a UFC 292 card that is expected to be headlined by a bantamweight title fight between Aljamain Sterling and Sean O’Malley, while women’s strawweight titleholder Zhang Weili fights Amanda Lemos in the co-main event.
