A flyweight title rematch between new flyweight champion Alexa Grasso and the woman she displaced from the throne, Valentina Shevchenko has been announced for an upcoming UFC event on September 16th in Las Vegas.
Interestingly the signs are that this might not feature on a PPV event, which would be a break from the norm of late where title fights are usually reserved for those shows.
At this stage it’s not clear what kind of show the UFC plans to deliver on September 16th, but with UFC 293 taking place in Sydney, Australia just a week earlier it seems quite unlikely that they’d host PPV shows two weeks in a row.
Grasso delivered a major upset to win the title and end Shevchenko’s four-year reign as champion when she pounced upon a face crank submission in the fourth round of a fight she appeared to be losing.
That was Grasso’s 5th win in a row since moving up to flyweight after previously after having had a mixed run at strawweight, where she went 3-3 at the start of her UFC run.
As for Shevchenko, prior to the loss against Grasso she had been on a nine-fight winning streak and had defended the 125lb belt 7 times.
