Middleweight contenders Mark Munoz and Chris Weidman will square off in the main event of ‘UFC On Fuel TV 4’ on July 11th.
Both Munoz and Weidman currently have two of the longest winning streaks in the 185lb division at this moment in time with four wins-apiece and a victory would push either fighter close to the No.1 contender spot.
Munoz in particular has already been talked about as far as the middleweight title picture goes, and in fact was set to face Chael Sonnen in a No.1 contender bout at UFC On FOX 2 back in January before an injury forced him to pull out of the fight.
That opportunity had arisen after a string of strong performances, taking out the likes of Aaron Simpson, Damien Maia, CB Dollaway and most recently TKO’ing Chris Leben in the main event of UFC 138, leaving him with an overall 7-2 record in the UFC.
Meanwhile, Weidman has come a long way in a short space of time in the UFC since joining with only four fights on his professional record. In less than a year he’s racked up wins over Alessio Sakara, Jesse Bongfeldt, Tom Lawlor and Demain Maia to emerge as a real force to be reckoned with.
It should be noted that his last win over Maia was far from spectacular, with both fighters appearing to run out of cardio mid-way through what would prove to be a tepid fight, and that hurt his momentum to an extent, but it’s worth remembering that he accepted that fight on just 11 days notice and had to cut a large amount of weight for it, so the fact that he emerged victorious against his toughest opponent to date was still impressive.
