Yesterday Josh Koscheck wrote on Twitter that the UFC had just offered him a fight with BJ Penn, but the Hawaiian has now poured cold water on the match-up.
“@joshkoscheck I know it costs a lot of money to live that lavish lifestyle, big house, fast cars & you need big fights but sorry I’m not coming back anytime soon!” Penn replied on Twitter.
That suggests that the UFC were indeed just testing the waters by asking Koscheck if he’d be interested in the fight rather than having been given the go-ahead by Penn himself.
Since Koscheck wasn’t a name that would entice Penn back into the cage it’s hard to see who would at welterweight.
As I’ve said all along, if he does come back I’d much prefer to see him do so at lightweight, but it looks like he’s planning on a long layoff now (if not full-one retirement) and therefore it’s only going to get harder for him to get back down to 155lbs in the future.
In the mean time, having lost to GSP twice now which will keep him out of the title mix for the forseeable future, Koscheck will surely be frustrated by Penn’s snub as it’s as high-profile a bout as he could get in the division at the moment.
