Strikeforce are coming out with all guns blazing for their January 12th event with a third title fight now being added to the line-up, along with their heavyweight tournament winner Daniel Cormier.
It’s now expected that lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez will square off against Pat Healy, a bout that was originally scheduled to go down back in September before ‘El Nino’ pulled out injured resulting in the cancelation of the entire event.
Melendez Vs Healy will join two other title fights on the card, with middleweight champ Luke Rockhold also facing Lorenz Larkin, while new welterweight title holder Nate Marquardt fights Tarec Saffiedine.
Meanwhile, Strikeforce heavyweight tournament winner Daniel Cormier will take on Dion Staring, and experienced campaigner with a 28-7 record.
There’s two ways of looking at this quadruple-header. Either it’s a major statement from Strikeforce and Showtime that they are still very much in the game and ready to make up for lost time, or it could be seen as one last big hurrah before they call it quits.
I have to say it looks very much like the latter option now as Strikeforce simply don’t have a deep enough roster to put out a stacked card like this that features practically all of their major stars outside of Ronda Rousey if they have any intention of having another event anytime in the near future.
One things for sure though, if they are going out then they are going to do so in style.
