In a closely contested fight at ‘UFC On Fuel TV 6’ Takanori Gomi was able to outpoint Mac Danzig via a split-decision verdict to earn his second win in a row.
In the opening half of the first round the two men traded strikes, with Gomi getting slightly the better of it as he worked to the body and head, though Danzig was able to move into the clinch at one stage and landed a few effective knees.
Then Gomi pushed forward and secured a takedown, but he wasn’t able to do much with the position and Danzig worked his way back up to his feet.
Again Gomi was working better in the striking exchanges, with Danzig only making an impact with some cautious leg kicks, but with only 20 seconds left in the round he suddenly changed levels and took Gomi to the mat and went straight to work with some nice ground and pound before the bell.
Back to the stand-up battle they went early in the second round which suited Gomi who was still doing a nice job of mixing up the level of his strikes, working to the body and then up to the head at times.
A couple of times Danzig looked for a takedown only to have his attempts stuffed. He didn’t give up though and after landing a nice two-piece combination he again swooped down and this time did get Gomi on his back. The break apart for a second and Danzig locks in a guillotine choke and drops back with it. Gomi tries to defend and Danzig flips him over, but he can’t quite get it and goes to his back again, but he’s not got it deep enough and Gomi makes it to the third round.
Gomi comes out looking for the home-run in the third and drops Danzig to the mat with a right hand. Gomi tries to improve his position, but Danzig counters with a leg lock, only for Gomi to attempt the same. Gomi breaks free and goes back down on top of his opponent, landing a few strikes before they head back to their feet.
Not for long though as Danzig now takes Gomi to the mat and starts raining down some shots from side control, but it’s not long before Gomi is back upright.
Gomi goes back to looking for a big finish, but he’s definitely more tired now and they clinch up against the cage. Danzig’s effective from here, landing a series of uppercuts that backs his opponent up. The two men then end the bout in a striking exchange.
This was a pretty close fight and that’s reflected in the scorecards as it’s a split-decision verdict, with Gomi getting the nod from two of the judges to claim victory (29-28 x2, 28-29).
