Former UFC fighter Robbie Lawler is set for a second stint in the promotion after several years of fighting for other organization’s such as EliteXC and more recently Strikeforce.
Lawler will drop to welterweight upon his return and his first assignment comes against former No.1 contender Josh Koscheck at UFC 157 on February 23rd.
In many respects it’s a fun match-up, though it’s a tough one for Lawler’s first fight back in the Octagon as his form hasn’t been the best recently, going 3-5 during his time in Strikeforce overall, though his defeats came to respected fighters like Jake Shields, ‘Jacare’ Souza and Tim Kennedy.
Meanwhile, Koscheck is coming off a split decision loss to Johny Hendricks which broke back-to-back wins he’d racked up since losing out in a title fight with GSP in late 2010.
If Koscheck uses his wrestling then it could be a tough night for Lawler, but on the feet ‘Ruthless’ is one of the most devastating one-punch knockout artists in the business so it would be a big gamble if Koscheck opts to stand and slug it out with him.
Koscheck Vs Lawler should end up with a main-card spot on the UFC 157 card which will be headlined by Ronda Rousey’s UFC debut against Liz Carmouche, while Dan Henderson faces Lyoto Machida in the main event.
