Former Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez is currently in the midst of a contractual tug-of-war as the two biggest organizations in the sport vie for his signature.
Alvarez’s deal with Bellator came to an end late last year and at that stage it appeared that the fighter, who’s often ranked as one of the top 10 lightweights in the world, was bound for the UFC, but though they have since offered him a deal, Bellator had the option to match it, and that’s what they’ve now done.
Alvarez was one of the fighters who helped Bellator get to where it is today, and with the company looking to make a big impact this year after making the switch to Spike TV it seems they are willing to put their money where their mouth is – or more accurately Viacom who currently own them are.
It’s not clear how things will proceed from here. Alvarez is believed to be seeking clarification on the legal aspects of the contracts, while Dana White admitted after UFC 155 last weekend that the situation was “about to turn ugly.”
Alvarez has always been loyal to Bellator, having fought for them since their very first event, but there’s no doubt that if he wants to compete on the biggest platform against the world’s other leading fighters then his only option is the UFC.
Staying with Bellator would allow him to remain a big fish in a smaller pond however and provides the chance to help make the company a success on Spike TV while still earning good money, so nothings certain at this stage.
