After Vitor Belfort’s victory over Michael Bisping last night at UFC On FX 7 he strangely made the decision to target Chael Sonnen in a post-fight rant, and naturally that lead to a swift response from the man himself who happened to be an analyst for Fuel TV last night.
“Take that punk Chael Sonnen, I don’t even know what your name is, and get out,” Belfort bellowed into the mic during his post-fight interview inside the Octagon. “Dana, Lorenzo, kick him out. Let me fight Jon Jones. I need that rematch. Take that clown away. Go home. You did a reality show, go home. Let me fight the real champion. A champion against a champion – not that clown.”
During the UFC’s post-fight show on Fuel TV, Sonnen had a few choice words to say to ‘The Phenom’ in return.
“Let be really clear and speak directly to you, Vitor. You’ve been telling the world you want to meet Jesus, and I’ll gladly arrange that travel. But first, I’m going to get rid of Jon Jones, but you are next.
“Let me be clear. Vitor, I accept, but don’t make any mistake about that. You’ve called me out twice now. Once after I signed a contract to fight Anderson, and once when you know I was busy with Jon Jones, but I’m letting you know I accept.”
Really you have to wonder what Belfort was thinking here. Aside from a nice armbar attempt it was pretty much one-way traffic when he fought for the 205lb title against Jon Jones last year so it’s just pie-in-the-sky thinking to call for rematch, and if that is his ambition then moving back down to 185lbs and beating Michael Bisping probably wasn’t the best way to go about it.
Also, it might have escaped Belfort’s attention, but the UFC are just about to kick off an entire season of The Ultimate Fighter based around the premise of a Jones Vs Sonnen title fight in April.
What would have made a whole lot more sense is if he had called for a rematch with Anderson Silva, who’s currently without an opponent and happened to be sitting cage-side at the time, for the 185lb title.
Bizarre stuff, but give him his dues, while his post-fight rant was ludicrous Belfort certainly impressed with the way in which he was able to finish Bisping.
