Anthony Pettis impressed everyone last night at ‘UFC On FOX 6’ with his first round body kick KO win over Donald Cerrone, and according to Dana White afterwards that was enough to earn him a lightweight title shot.
However he’ll have to wait a while as incoming Strikeforce 155lb champ Gilbert Melendez will get the first shot at current title holder Ben Henderson.
“I think that Melendez is pretty set, but [Pettis is] next,” White said after the event. “I can’t say enough good things about this guy. He was incredible tonight. His big all-time highlight will be the kick off the fence. Today he was unbelievable. The knee off the fence was unbelievable.”
Of course Pettis is actually the last man to beat Henderson in a close fight at the WEC’s final show back at the end of 2010. Since then Henderson has racked up a six fight winning streak in the UFC, while Pettis initially faltered with a loss to Clay Guida before rebounding with three victories in a row.
First things first though, Henderson takes on Melendez at ‘UFC On FOX 7’ on April 20th, and that means Pettis is guaranteed a tough, exciting fight regardless of who emerges the winner.
