It looks like there’s going to be no amicable solution to former Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez’s contract disputes with the promotion as he attempts to free himself in order to join the UFC.
The problem stems from a clause in Alvarez’s previous contract with Bellator that allows them to match any offer for him from another promotion. They have exercised that right, claiming to have matched an offer from the UFC, but the fighter and his legal team argue that this is not the case and that the monetary value is not equal.
Recently thing went a little quiet with this case and there were rumors that perhaps Alvarez and Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney may be able to settle their differences behind the scenes without the need to go down the legal route, but judging by the latest comments from the fighters that’s not the case.
“We will be going to trial and there will be NO settlement,” Alvarez told his followers on Twitter. “I want to see this thing through and let the truth come out in the end. I am in no hurry. This has always been a marathon for me, not a sprint, and time will only make me more dangerous when I fight, I promise.”
In fact, Alvarez is so determined to see this through that he’s sold an investment property to help finance the wait while the trial takes place.
It’s an unfortunate situation and hopefully Alvarez doesn’t have to sit on the sidelines for too much longer before a final decision is made and he can get back to making a living, whether it’s in the Bellator cage or the UFC’s Octagon.
