Shane Del Rosario Died Of Natural Causes; Traces Of Illegal Drugs Discovered In His System

According to Shane Del Rosario’s death certificate, the UFC heavyweight fighter died of natural causes resulting from anoxic encephalopathy, ventricular fibrillation and Long QT syndrome.

Del Rosario was found unconscious by his roommate and fellow UFC fighter Ian McCall at his home on November 26th and was immediately rushed into hospital. Sadly, Del Rosario had experienced a full cardiac arrest and as a result had suffered brain damage due to a lack of oxygen. He also had an irregular heartbeat, often an indicator of congenital heart disease.

While doctor’s were able to revive the 30 year-old and put him on life support, he wasn’t able to recover and was officially declared dead on December 3rd. His family initially refused to have him taken off life-support though, and that’s the reason that word of his passing wasn’t finally confirmed to the public until December 9th.

The most surprising information found on the death certificate is that while they are not believed to have lead to his death, Del Rosario was found to have had traces of cocaine, opiates and THC in his system.

Del Rosario’s family will grant his wish to have his organ’s donated, while there are also plans in motion to start a foundation in his name to support research into the condition known as Long QT Syndrome.

Over the years I've watched the UFC develop into the powerhouse it is today, organizations like PRIDE, Strikeforce and WEC rise and fall, and Bellator emerge as a new force on the MMA landscape. Throughout it all I've remained captivated by the sport and I'm excited to cover what comes next here on MMA Insight.
