Yesterday, Silva’s manager Jorge Guimaraes stated that he was in no doubt that Anderson Silva would fight again after the horrifying broken leg he suffered against Chris Weidman at UFC 168, and now he’s gone one step further by suggesting that they are still interested in a fight with Georges St.Pierre.
“Don’t you think that’s an option?” Guimaraes asked MMAjunkie when asked about Silva’s future.
Well, given that Silva’s almost certain to be out for the whole of 2014 rehabilitating from his injury and GSP just vacated his welterweight title so that he could take an extended break from the UFC with no guarantee that he’ll ever return, it certainly does seem like a bit of a stretch, but apparently even Silva’s other long-term advisor, Ed Soares also thinks it’s worth pursuing.
“Man, if we were able to pull something like that off, it would be a win-win for everybody: the fans, the UFC,” Soares said. “I think that would be awesome.”
It seems that the root of Soares and Guimaraes optimism comes from Silva himself who’s already recovering quicker than expected and will begin physical therapy next week.
“He’s already moving his toes,” Guimareas said. “I feel that positive vibe on him, and that’s what makes me believe he’s going to come back even stronger.”
Silva also appears to be keen on a comeback – after all, the first thing he asked the doctor after his initial leg surgery was when he could train again – but still, it’s somewhat surprising that they would already be discussing potential superfights at this early stage in his recovery.
