While nothing is set in stone yet, but according to the UFC Tonight show the promotion is currently looking to put together a hard-hitting heavyweight scrap between Roy Nelson and Mark Hunt.
Perhaps the most remarkable thing about this match-up is that it hasn’t happened sooner given that these two are amongst the heaviest hitters ever in UFC history and also own two of the most legendary chins in the sport into the bargain.
All seven of Nelson’s UFC victories have come by either knockout or TKO, recently adding to that record with a knockout victory over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in Abu Dhabi to put an end to a two-fight losing streak.
Meanwhile, after an impressive run of form that saw him notch up four victories in a row, Hunt rebounded from a last minute loss to former champion Junior dos Santos with a remarkable slug-fest against Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva that ended in a majority draw, but went down as one of the fights of the year, and one of the best heavyweight fights of all time.
As yet there’s no word on exactly when this fight will take place, though it’s rumored it could be getting targeted for the UFC’s next show in Japan which takes place in September.
If so, that would make a lot of sense since Hunt was a big star there during the PRIDE era, defeating the likes of Wanderlei Silva and Mirko Cro Cop in their heyday.
Both men are currently dealing with hand injuries though, so how quickly they recover from that will determine exactly when the fight takes place.
