Chris Camozzi has announced that he’s been released by the UFC, bringing an end to a 13 fight run in the promotion over the course of four and a half years.
Camozzi initially made his way to the UFC via The Ultimate Fighter Season 11 where he made it past the elimination round only to then have to pull out due to an injury.
He was given a chance to prove himself in the Octagon after the show finished however and seized it with two victories in a row. A couple of losses the following year to Kyle Noke and Francis Carmont hinted that there may be a ceiling to how far Comozzi would be able to rise in the middleweight ranks.
However, Camozzi did then go on to string together a four-fight winning streak, defeating the likes of Nick Ring and Luiz Cane along the way.
Unfortunately for him he would again came up short against the upper echelon level of competition next time out with a first round submission loss to Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza, and that was to be the first of four losses in a row over the space of 18 months that would lead to him being cut from the UFC roster.
In total Camozzi leaves with a 7-6 record in the UFC, and an overall career run of 19-9 to date. At the age of 27 he’s still got a lot of fighting left in him though, so it’s likely that he’ll find a home with one of the other leading organizations like Bellator or World Series Of Fighting before long.
“Cuts are minor nuances that sometimes leave a scar as a reminder,” said in a blog post to reveal the news. “They are not life changing and if you treat them the right way you can possibly learn how to avoid them in the future.
I knew this [Rafael] Natal fight was win or move on, probably for both of us. In my heart I felt like I had done enough to win. I left my UFC contract in the judges hands. They felt like I lost and getting cut is what comes with that decision. It is unfortunate that MMA judging and statistical fight analysis is so far off. Instead of looking back I am going to look forward, look forward to building my MMA career.”
