Melvin Guillard Misses Weight, Loses WSOF 15 Title Shot

Melvin Guillard has lost out on his title shot opportunity at WSOF 15 tonight after failing to make the 155lb limit for his fight with lightweight champion Justin Gaethje.

Guillard weighed in at 158.8lbs and despite being given two further hours he was unable to shed the rest of the weight.

As a result the fight now goes ahead at a 159lb catchweight bout with the belt no longer on the line, so Gaethje will remain the title holder regardless of what happens tonight.

Guillard has failed to make weight on a number of occasions now, both while in his long run in the UFC, and now outwith the promotion. In fact the 31 year-old has now successfully made weight just once in his last four fights.

Earlier in the week Guillard had shared heated words with WSOF Senior Executive President Ali Abdel-Aziz during a media call for the event. Abdel-Aziz took exception to comments from Guillard earlier on in the week in which he had described himself as “an A-list fighter, fighting in the B-League.”

Guillard said he didn’t appreciate Abdel-Aziz commenting on it and clarified that while he thought WSOF were “right up there” with the UFC as an organization, the best fighters were still in the UFC.

He also stated that, “As far as me fighting for the title? I’m honored. I’m eager. This is my chance to put a gold belt around my waist to solidify my legacy.”

Of course we now know that’s not going to happen due to his weight-cut, but tonight he’ll still be able to prove whether or not he was correct to label Gaethje as, “nowhere near my level.”
