Bellator CEO Scott Coker has announced that the promotion will be joining forces with kickboxing organization GLORY for a hybrid show at Bellator 141 on September 19th in San Jose.
The intriguing line-up will be headlined by a light-heavyweight title fight between current champion Liam McGeary and Tito Ortiz.
Beneath that will be a one-night 205lb tournament to establish a new title contender, featuring Phil Davis, Muhammed ‘King Mo’ Lawal, Emmanuel Newton and Linton Vassell.
The opening round of the tournament will last only two rounds, with the final taking place over three rounds on the same night.
The fight pairings have yet to be unveiled and there’s still a further reserve bout to be confirmed as well in case any of the four fighters involved get injured.
The tournament is a strong selling point in and of itself, but that’s not all as the event will also feature three GLORY kickboxing bouts which will be fought in a separate ring inside the arena.
At this stage we’re still waiting to find out all the competitors for this portion of the show, but Paul Daley and Joe Schilling are already confirmed.
All in all this looks like being the biggest event of the year for Bellator, and the mix of formats should provide a breath of fresh air and generate a lot of interest for the promotion.
