Conor McGregor was a guest on Conan O’Brien’s talk show last night and entertained the audience with his banter and unflappable self-belief.
At one point the discussion turned to whether McGregor would be willing to fight boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr and of course the answer was yes.
“If you’re asking would I like to fight Floyd Mayweather… I mean, who would not like to dance around the ring for $180 million?” McGregor said.
“I certainly know he would not want to step into my world. The world of pure unarmed combat where there’s no limitations, but I most certainly would step into his world. I would certainly box him if the opportunity arose. Most certainly.”
The outspoken Irishman feels that a crossover fight is all that’s left for Mayweather now after years at the top of the heap in the boxing world.
“There’s no real fight in boxing left for Floyd anyways. After the Manny [Pacquiao] fight happened, there’s no more real draws. If you’re looking for a fight that would generate interest, it must be a cross and match up different styles.”
While ‘The Notorious’ acknowledges that Mayweather is as close to unbeatable as you’re likely to get in the boxing ring, he’s certain that outside of his comfort zone ‘Money’ would find himself in deep waters.
“I’ve said it before, I don’t think boxing is the style of fighting that can beat Floyd but saying that there are many, many forms of fighting that can beat him.
“If we were to get it on, I would most certainly dismantle him, also.”
For now McGregor will have to make to do with fighting Chad Mendes for the UFC’s interim featherweight title at UFC 189 a week on Saturday in Las Vegas, and after being shown a montage of his new opponent (who coincidentally also uses the ‘Money’ nickname’) talking trash about him, McGregor brushed aside any notion that he was a credible threat to his current 13-fight winning streak.
“He can talk all he wants, but face to face, man to man, they crumble. Every time I face against one of these individuals they break, so he will be no different.”
