Doctor’s are still assessing UFC Fight Night 74 headliner Charles Oliveira after he suffered a freak injury while attempting a takedown against Max Holloway last night.
The incident happened early in the first round and left Oliveira in distress holding his upper shoulder / neck area before sinking to the canvas resulting in Holloway being awarded a TKO victory. He spent a worrying amount of time there after the fight was over and was then strechered out of the arena and transported to hospital with a neck brace.
Details are still thin on the ground, but the positive news from UFC officials last night was that Oliveira is alert and has shown movement in all his extremities so hopefully the highly talented 25 year-old is going to make a full recovery.
“Send your prayers to Charles,” his opponent Holloway stated in the Octagon after the fight. “It’s part of the game. It’s sad to see that happening. This is how we make a living.”
Holloway extended his unbeaten run to seven fights on the night, though not in the manner he would have hoped to accomplish that impressive feat, while Oliveira’s four-fight unbeaten stretch came to a end. For now though he’ll just be more concerned about getting healthy again.
