Conor McGregor Bio

Early MMA Career

Less than three years after he first set foot in the Octagon, 27-year-old UFC interim featherweight champion Conor McGregor has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame and fortune in the sport.

Hailing from Dublin, Ireland, ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor made his professional MMA debut in 2008 at the age of 19, producing an initial 4-1 record before catching the attention of Cage Warriors in 2010.

His first fight for the established UK based promotion ended in defeat by a first round arm-triangle submission to Patrick Duffy, another Irishman who’s since made his way to the UFC. Undeterred, McGregor went on to compile four stoppage victories via strikes in local promotions during the first half of 2011 before returning to Cage Warriors.

This time, he seized the opportunity with both hands and put together a four-fight winning run in the promotion during which he won both the Cage Warriors featherweight and then lightweight titles.

With a 12-2 record, McGregor was now considered one of Europe’s most promising young talents, though he has since admitted that he was still under his parent’s roof, living off social welfare and contemplating a career as a plumber at the time.

Entering & Exploding Through the UFC Ranks

Luckily his exploits had caught the attention of the sport’s leading promotion and in February of 2013 he signed for the UFC where he was taken under the wing of UFC bosses Dana White and the Fertitta brothers and hyped as a future star. He took to the spotlight like a duck to water, winning his 145lb promotional debut against Marcus Brimage in Sweden by TKO in just 67 seconds.

Next up, a unanimous decision victory over Max Holloway came at a cost with an ACL injury keeping him out of action for 10 months. A natural showman, McGregor”s outspoken antics ensured he remained one of the most talked about stars in the sport even during his lay-off, though some questioned whether he was really as good as he liked to tell everyone he was.

First round TKO wins over Diego Brandao and Dustin Poirier in the space of six weeks upon his return to action, the latter in his native Dublin where he was hailed as a national hero, suggested he could indeed back up his words with action in the octagon.

2015 arrived with talk of a title shot, but first he had to beat Dennis Siver which he promptly did by second round TKO. The fight was watched by 3.2 million viewers, making it the most-watched event ever on FOX Sports 1.

Title Fights & McGregor’s Rise to Being One of the Biggest Stars in the UFC

A title fight with featherweight kingpin Jose Aldo at UFC 189 in July now awaited McGregor, but after the most expensive promotional campaign in UFC history, disaster struck when Aldo pulled out of the fight with a rib injury on just a few days notice. Another top contender, Chad Mendes stepped in at short notice with the interim title now on the line and gave the Irish star his toughest fight to date, out-grappling him for the best part of two rounds before McGregor rose to his feet and promptly TKO’d him to win the belt.

With over 800,000 fans paying to watch the fight on pay-per-view, McGregor became a millionaire overnight and cemented h is status as one of the sport’s biggest stars.

A title unification bout with Aldo at UFC 194 in December is not only being touted as the ‘Fight Of The Year’ by the promotion, bit it expected to surpass UFC 100 and become the biggest UFC event of all time in regards to pay-per-view sales.

Recently, McGregor featured as a coach opposite Urijah Faber on The Ultimate Fighter reality show.
