Nate Diaz was a guest on the latest edition of UFC Tonight alongside Kenny Florian and Michael Bisping, where he discussed a potential rematch with Conor McGregor and whether he’d be interested in a title shot instead, among other topics.
The rumormill suggests that the UFC want to put together a 170lb rematch between Diaz and McGregor at UFC 200, and it appears that the Stockton star is down for that, though he’d prefer to see it take place at 155lbs.
“If there’s a second fight, whatever. I’ll fight at (155),” Diaz said. “I’d like to be in shape and be cut up and not have to hear it out of the fans and the people. Not even the fans but the guy (Conor McGregor), I don’t want to hear no excuses.”
It was suggested to Diaz that perhaps he’d prefer to have a title shot next rather than the rematch, but he actually sounds less than enthused by the prospect of becoming a champion.
“I think that title thing’s a fairytale,” Diaz said. “All these guys are like ‘I want the belt, I want to be the champion’ but the best fighters in the world are getting paid the best money. That belt thing, as far as I’m concerned, is a fairytale. That might piss a lot of people off, but money talks. If the best fighters aren’t getting the most money then why are they getting paid that money for?”
A rematch with McGregor would undoubtedly be another huge payday, so Diaz seems comfortable with that idea, and he can see why people would want to watch them lock horns for a second time.
“It’s a real fight. Some people want to see that fight. Obviously, it just happened it was a real fight. When you get a real fight, people appreciate it. If that’s what he wants to do and that’s what the UFC wants to do, let’s run it back. Let’s do it again.
