Dana White has revealed that welterweight champion Robbie Lawler will return to the Octagon soon, but it seems he won’t be getting a spot on July 9th’s UFC 200 card in Las Vegas.
The UFC President dropped some inside info on Lawler’s next UFC bout at the RFA 37 event in San Diego last night during filming for his popular internet series, ‘Dana White: Looking For A Fight’.
White told RFA’s commentary team, Michael Schiavello and Pat Miletich on AXS TV that Lawler is currently being targeted for either UFC 201 or UFC 202, two pay-per-view events that don’t yet have an official date or venue set as of yet.
He also stated that while an opponent for Lawler hasn’t been decided yet, “It’s more than likely going to be (Tyron) Woodley.”
Woodley is currently ranked No.3 in the division and has won four of his last five fights, but has been sitting on the sidelines for the past 15 months since a split decision win against Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 183.
Lawler last competed at UFC 195 in January, successfully defending his title by split decision against Carlos Condit, and due to the close nature of that fight some fans had been hoping for an immediate rematch, but it now seems that won’t be the case.
Due to the fact that the UFC haven’t yet officially announced what the co-main event will be for UFC 200 there had also been talk that perhaps Lawler would defend his title there, but that seem to have been ruled out. With lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos also now booked to fight Eddie Alvarez at UFC Fight Night 90, the chances of the promotion still having another huge fight up their sleeve to add to their 200th show are rapidly decreasing.
