A woman’s flyweight fight between Joanne Calderwood and Valerie Letourneau has been announced for UFC Fight Night 89 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on June 18th.
The fight will mark the first ever 125lb pound fight in UFC history, but the promotion have stopped short of officially announcing the new weight class so far, as they are still considering whether to go ahead with it or not.
Both fighters have until now been plying their trade in the UFC’s strawweight division, with Letourneau currently ranked No.5 in the division, though she is coming off a unanimous decision loss to current champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk at UFC 193 last November.
Prior to that the 32 year-old Canadian had racked up three victories in a row inside the Octagon, which included a single fight at bantamweight.
As for Calderwood, she currently holds a 2-1 record in the UFC, with her last outing being a decision victory over newcomer Cortney Casey at UFC Fight Night 72 in her native Scotland last summer.
After that, Calderwood had been scheduled to face Paige VanZant at UFC Fight Night 80, but an injury forced her out of the bout.
Calderwood Vs Letourneau joins a UFC Fight Night 89 card that’s set to be headlined by a major welterweight fight between Rory MacDonald and Stephen Thompson, while Donald Cerrone will fight Patrick Cote in the co-main event of the evening.
