FOX Sports host Colin Cowherd has made a bold claim that a rumored boxing match between Floyd Mayweather Jr and the UFC’s Conor McGregor is in the works, even stating that it would take place in Las Vegas in September.
“My intel is that Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather is going to happen,” Cowherd stated on his ‘The Herd’ show yesterday.
“It changed late last week. I got a call, then somebody else sent me something yesterday and Saturday (saying) ‘we’ve booked rooms in Vegas’.”
Cowherd had UFC president Dana White on his show as recently as just two weeks ago, so he’s well connected, but it still appears hard to imagine that all the respective parties who would be involved in putting together a fight like this would be able to reach an agreement on it.
Cowherd argues that while the fight wouldn’t be competitive, it stands to make everyone involved a lot of money, and that’s what will push the deal through.
Still, it seems to go against what was happening last week, with the UFC meeting Conor McGregor in Los Angeles to discuss his next fight, then just a day later showing up on Stockton to speak with Nate Diaz, suggesting that they are looking to sign up a rematch between them.
Admittedly, Dana White later stated that the talk with Diaz didn’t go well, with a report claiming that the UFC President had actually stormed out of the tavern they were in, mid-way through their discussion, so technically that could back up Cowherd’s claim that things changed late last week.
However, it’s highly unlikely that the UFC, McGregor and Mayweather, plus everyone else that would be involved in a deal of this magnitude, were somehow able to strike a deal for them to fight in September in the space of just a few days.
It’s also worth noting that at the same time that Cowherd made his claim, long-time boxing and MMA journalist Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports was informing his readers that, “The idea of a potential bout — a boxing match — between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor is sheer lunacy. It’s almost certainly not going to happen and yet Mayweather is leading many around like sheep.”
