During last night’s fight broadcast, the UFC announced a heavyweight fight between Fabricio Werdum and Ben Rothwell, which will take place at UFC 203 in Cleveland on September 10th.
That means former heavyweight champion Werdum is wasting no time in getting back on the saddle after losing his belt to Stipe Miocic by first round knockout at UFC 198 earlier this month in front of over 45,000 fans in his native Brazil.
Prior to that, the 38 year-old Werdum had won six fights in a row and taken out a number of big-name heavyweight stars like Cain Velasquez, Mark Hunt, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Travis Browne and Roy Nelson.
One man he didn’t face during that run was Rothwell, who’s coming off a unanimous decision loss to Junior dos Santos at the same event as Werdum.
Like his new opponent, that ended the 34 year-old Rothwell’s own unbeaten stretch which had featured no less than four wins over the likes of Brandon Vera, Alistair Overeem, Matt Mitrione and Josh Barnett.
A win for either man would propel them right back into title contention in the division, and it just so happens that the main event of UFC 203 will feature Stipe Miocic’s first defense of the heavyweight strap against Alistair Overeem.
