A major welterweight fight between Carlos Condit and Demian Maia has been switched from it’s original landing spot at UFC 202 on August 20th in Las Vegas to the main event of UFC On FOX 21 in Vancouver a week later.
The 32 year-old Condit had contemplated retirement following his last fight, a split decision loss to Robbie Lawler at UFC 195 in January, citing concerns about his long-term health if he continued to compete, but the No.5 ranked 170lb’er has since had a change of heart, for the time being at least.
Maia is currently in a rich vein of form and at 38 years-old is enjoying one of his best ever runs in the UFC with five victories in a row over the likes of Neil Magny, Gunnar Nelson and most recently Matt Brown.
That’s left the Brazilian ranked No.3 in the division, so a win over ‘The Natural Born Killer’ could pave the way for a title shot at 170lbs.
Condit Vs Maia tops a UFC On FOX 21 fight card that’s also set to feature Anthony Pettis’ featherweight debut against Charles Oliveira, with Paige VanZant Vs Bec Rawlings and a rematch between Joe Lauzon and Jim Miller also on-board.
As for UFC 202, it’s been weakened a little by the removal of Condit Vs Maia, but the big draw for that event was always going to be the made event between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz, while Anthony Johnson Vs Glover Teixeira takes the co-main event spot on that one.
