Hulking heavyweight Shane Carwin has announced that he is set to return to the sport of MMA, but it won’t be with the UFC.
Writing on The UG Forum, Carwin revealed that after discussions with the UFC he’s become a free agent and is now willing to speak to any other organization who are interested in bringing him on-board.
The 41 year-old retired five years ago following a decision loss to Junior dos Santos at UFC 131 in a title elmination fight.
Prior to that Carwin had fought for the belt against Brock Lesnar, coming extremely close to finishing him with ground and pound in the opening round, before being submitted in the second.
That was the first time that Carwin had tasted defeat in his career, having gone a perfect 12-0 up until that point, including having finished all four of his previous UFC fights in the first round due to strikes.
An exceptionally large man with a physique that can rival the likes of Brock Lesnar, together with being one of the hardest punchers ever seen in the sport, Carwin will unquestionably attract the interest of some of the sport’s leading promotions.
The big question though is whether he’s healthy enough to make a sustained comeback given that he’d initially hung up his gloves due to numerous injuries.
