A pivotal middleweight fight between former champion Chris Weidman and Yoel Romero is set to go down at the star-studded UFC 205 event at Madison Square Garden in New York City on November 12th.
Weidman is itching to get back into the Octagon after losing the title to Luke Rockhold by a fourth round TKO at UFC 194 in December of 2015.
That was the first time Weidman had tasted defeat in his fourteen fight career, having previously gone on an unbeaten stretch that saw him defeat the likes of Anderson Silva (twice), Vitor Belfort, Lyoto Machida and Demian Maia.
Since his loss to Rockhold the 185lb title has changed hands again, with Michael Bisping unexpectedly seizing the belt after a KO victory.
Despite being ranked No.2 in the division, Weidman was overlooked for an immediate title shot in favor of a fan-pleasing rematch between Bisping and veteran campaigner, Dan Henderson.
That’s how the 32 year-old Weidman now finds himself squaring off with the middleweight division’s No.4 ranked Romero next, in a bout with major title implications in the weight class.
Like his opponent, Romero has been a dominant force in the middleweight division over the past few years, and is currently riding a seven-fight winning streak.
Along the way he’s defeated the likes of Tim Kennedy, Lyoto Machida and most recently Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza, and he’s now eager to add Weidman’s name to that impressive list.
Weidman Vs Romero is believed to have been slated for UFC 205’s main card, but it won’t serve as the main event of the evening for the historic NYC event.
At the moment the headliner is still under wraps, but the card is already filling up nicely, with other recent additions including Rashad Evans middleweight debut against Tim Kennedy and Donald Cerrone fighting Kelvin Gastelum.
