If those on the UFC’s roster need a high-profile figure to champion a potential Fighters Union then Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone has made it clear that he’s happy to throw his hat into the ring.
“I’ll gladly put my head on the chopping block and say I’ll be the front face of this mother f*cker,” Cerrone stated during a UFC 205 media lunch this week. “I’ve paid my way, man. I’ve earned the right to sit here and speak. I think there’s a lot of people that are scared and not willing to step up and do it. It’s gonna take a couple of us and it needs to be done.”
Cerrone says he plans to speak to a couple of different groups who are looking to unionize fighters after his upcoming fight with Kelvin Gastelum in NYC on November 12th.
Like many others in the sport, Cerrone believes that it’s long overdue for fighters to have proper representation to help maximize their earning power, increase their health benefits, develop a pension fund, as well as improving fighter rights.
“We have no direction. We have no one to stand up for the fighters’ rights. If something bad were to happen, no one backs him and it’s just him alone and everything gets washed out. We need people to stand up and fight for it.”
