A media conference call featuring some of the biggest stars in MMA has been set for Wednesday to unveil an “industry redefining” announcement.
Among those involved in the call will be three former UFC champions, Georges St-Pierre, Cain Velasquez and TJ Dillashaw, plus Donald Cerrone, Tim Kennedy and Bellator founder Bjorn Rebney.
The exact nature of the announcement is currently under wraps, but all signs point to this being related to a rumored fighters union.
If so there could be political undertones here given that, apart from Cerrone, all the fighters mentioned are signed to the CAA talent agency – a direct competitor to UFC owners WME-IMG.
Having GSP on-board is a big deal, especially since he’s been at loggerheads with the UFC over a potential return to the sport over the past few months.
The fact that former Bellator boss Rebney is involved will undoubtedly raise some eyebrows and may also ruffle a few feathers. Rebney was replaced by Scott Coker as the CEO of Bellator in 2014 and has kept a low-profile since then.
It’s not such a surprise to see Cerrone involved as he publicly stated recently that he would be willing to front a push to get a fighters union established.
We’ll have to wait until 4pm ET on Wednesday to find out exactly what they have up their sleeve, but it certainly sounds like this is something that’s going to be worth keeping a very close eye on.
