Injury prone former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez has revealed that he’s scheduled to undergo yet more surgery, but not until his rematch with Fabricio Werdum at UFC 207 on December 30th.
“I wanted to talk about something that I know far too well,” Velasquez said during a media call to unveil the new Mixed Martial Arts Fighters Association. “My first fight in the UFC was in 2008. Since that time, I’ve had seven surgeries. Two mensicus surgeries, one MCL surgery on my right knee, taking cartilage out of my left elbow, both shoulder I’ve had torn labrums that needed repairing, and back surgery. I have a fight Dec. 30. After that fight, I’m already scheduled for my next surgery.”
At this stage it’s unclear what the nature of his next procedure is, but whatever it is, it’s not exactly an ideal situation heading into a crucial fight that will see him try to avenge a 2015 loss to Werdum that resulted in him losing his title.
It’s not good news for the UFC either, as the winner of Velasquez Vs Werdum is set to go on to fight Stipe Miocic for the heavyweight belt, so they’ll no doubt be keeping their fingers crossed that the operation doesn’t keep him out of action for too long.
