UFC Middleweight champion Michael Bisping won’t be returning to action in the first few months of 2017 as he’s revealed he needs to undergo minor knee surgery.
“I actually found out just recently I’ve got to have a knee surgery. Nothing major, just a clean up,” Bisping told Fight Network. “I’ve got a slightly torn meniscus, a couple other things going on in there, so I’ve got to get that knee surgery taken care of. We scheduled that and I should be having that in the next couple of weeks.”
It doesn’t sound as if the operation will keep ‘The Count’ out of action for too long though.
“Get that taken care of and I’ll probably be defending the belt around May, something like that I would guess,” Bisping estimated.
The 37 year-old enjoyed the best year of his career in 2016, first defeating hall-of-famer Anderson Silva by unanimous decision, then producing a major upset KO win in a short notice title fight with Luke Rockhold, before successfully defending the belt for the first time against his old nemesis Dan Henderson.
Upon his return Bisping is expected to face No.1 contender Yoel Romero, who is currently unbeaten in eight fights since joining the UFC in 2013.
