Two former UFC veterans clashed in the cage in Brazil last night, with Matt Hamill emerging victorious by KO against Luiz Cane.
The light-heavyweight scrap took place at ‘Fight 2 Night 2’ in Foz do Iguacu, Parana in Brazil and marked Hamill’s first victory in almost five years.
The 40-year-old was able to rock Cane with a left hand early in the fight and then dropped him with a series of uppercuts, with a final punch to his grounded opponent sealing the knockout win just 38 seconds into the bout.
Hamill’s last fight in the UFC took place in 2013, suffering a decision loss to Thiago Silva. At that stage he had lost three of his last four bouts in the Octagon and was subsequently released from the promotion.
He briefly retired in 2014 due to injuries, but returned in 2015, suffering a submission loss to Vinny Magalhaes in a short-lived run in the WSOF promotion, before racking up further losses to Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and Julian Marquez in smaller shows.
With that in mind, Hamill desperately needed a victory under his belt, and doing so in such emphatic fashion against a notable opponent will make the victory even sweeter.
It wasn’t such a good night for Cane though, with the KO loss snapping a three-fight winning streak for the 36-year-old.
Cane was dropped from the UFC in 2012, and including his loss last night he’s now compiled a 5-2 record since then while competing exclusively in his native Brazil.
Several other ex-UFC fighters experienced mixed fortunes on the ‘Fight 2 Night 2’ card, with Paulo Thiago and William ‘Patolino’ Macario emerging victorious in their main card fights, while Erica Almeida and Akhiro Gono lost their bouts.
