It’s common knowledge that Donald Cerrone likes to fight as often as he can, but after suffering a TKO loss to Jorge Masvidal in his last trip to the Octagon, Dana White stepped in and forced him to take time out.
Cerrone had been looking for his fifth win in a row at welterweight when he took on ‘Gamebred’ at UFC On FOX 23 in front of his home fans in Denver, Colorado, but it turned out not to be and he admits that he got his bell rung pretty hard that night.
“Getting a win at home would have been awesome, but sometimes you’ve got to take an ass-whupping, I guess,” Cerrone told ESPN’s ‘Five Rounds’ podcast. “When the doctor tried to look at me and make sure I was OK — told me to take three steps forward or he’d stop the fight — I don’t remember any of that s—. So, yeah. It is what it is.”
Afterwards, White saved ‘Cowboy’ from himself by insisting that he needed to take time to recover following his ninth UFC fight in two years.
“I would have fought sooner, but [UFC president Dana White] put me in timeout for a while,” Cerrone revealed.
“After the [Masvidal loss], he said, ‘You’re in timeout.’ I asked if I could call him for a fight and he said, ‘No.’ I said, ‘Come on. ‘ He said, ‘No.'”
Cerrone’s tough loss last time out doesn’t seem to have dampened his enthusiasm for fighting though, and after six months off he’s now looking forward to locking horns with former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler at UFC 213 in July.
“There’s no thrill like a fight in the world,” Cerrone said. “It’s the scariest roller-coaster ride of emotions, excitement and fun you can have. And I make a s—load of money doing it, so I get to go on a spending spree afterwards.”
