The UFC have announced that a pay-per-view event they had planned for August has been scrapped.
The show had never been officially confirmed, but it was known that the intention was to host UFC 215 in Seattle on August 18th and there had been talk that they had been targeting a fight between flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson and TJ Dillashaw to headline it.
However, there have been several spanners in the works recently, not least of which was the confirmation that Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather’s boxing fight for the ages would be taking place just a week later in Las Vegas.
Given the amount of attention that’s going to generate and potentially record-breaking pay-per-view numbers it could draw, any other PPV in or around that time would undoubtedly suffer.
Then there’s the fact that Johnson has never been a PPV draw in the first place, and that he was adamant that he wanted to fight Ray Borg next, rather than what would be a higher profile match-up with former bantamweight champion Dillashaw.
With all that in mind it seems the UFC decided it would just be best to bin the event altogether and so now what was originally supposed to be UFC 216 on September 9th in Edmonton, Canada will now become UFC 215 instead.
That means that as things stand the UFC only has one MMA event slated for August on the 5th of that month, UFC Fight Night 114, which will be headlined by Sergio Pettis and Brandon Moreno in Mexico City.
