Despite Dana White claiming just a few days ago that Robbie Lawler Vs Donald Cerrone wouldn’t be getting rescheduled for the already stacked UFC 214 in Anaheim, California on July 29th, it turns out that’s exactly what is happening after all.
The welterweight clash had originally been announced for UFC 213 on July 9th in Las Vegas, but Cerrone suffered a pulled groin and staph infection which left him unable to compete on that day.
White then claimed that Cerrone wouldn’t be fit in time for the UFC 214 show at the end of that month, but apparently there’s been a change of plans since then.
Lawler has been out of action for a year after losing his welterweight title by KO to Tyron Woodley at UFC 201, bringing an end to a memorable five-fight winning streak at the top end of the 170lb division.
Cerrone has also had a bit of a break by his standards, taking six months away from the Octagon following a TKO loss to Jorge Masvidal at UFC On FOX 23 in January, which also halted his own solid four-fight unbeaten stretch in the welterweight ranks.
Lawler Vs Cerrone moving to UFC 214 means that card now has an embarassment of riches, including no less than three title fights.
Light-heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will rematch his bitter rival Jon Jones in the main event, Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino vies for the vacant women’s featherweight title against Tonya Evinger and welterweight champ Tyron Woodley locks horns with Demian Maia.
