UFC 215’s headliner between flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson and Ray Borg has been cancelled on short notice due to the title challenger suffering from an illness.
It’s believed that Borg has been ill all week and had been trying to soldier on regardless, but ultimately UFC doctor’s decided that he wasn’t fit to fight, leading him to being pulled from the card.
That’s a huge blow for Johnson, who had been hoping to set the record for the most consecutive title defenses in UFC history (11) on Saturday night, but will now have to watch the show from the sidelines instead.
However, it may not be too long before he does get a chance to try and break the record as rumors are already swirling that the fight between Johnson and Borg may now be moved to UFC 216 on October 7th in Las Vegas instead, where it would slot in alongside a lightweight interim title bout between Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee.
With Johnson Vs Borg scratched, UFC 215 now proceeds with a women’s bantamweight title fight between Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko taking centerstage, while a flyweight encounter between former title contenders Henry Cejudo and Wilson Reis has been moved up to the pay-per-view portion of the card.
