The Mayweather Vs McGregor blockbuster boxing event has now officially broken one major pay-per-view record, with more people paying to watch the live broadcast in the UK than any other in history.
According to Sky Sports, more than one million people in the UK bought the PPV, whereas Mayweather’s ‘Fight Of The Century’ with Manny Pacquiao a couple of years earlier had registered 700,000 buys.
The number is particularly impressive when you consider that UK fans had to stay up until well after 4am in the morning to catch the start of the much-hyped showdown between the two fighters.
Breaking the million PPV barrier in the UK alone means that Mayweather Vs McGregor is well on it’s way to setting the all-time worldwide record as well.
However, that still hinges on the final results of the North American pay-per-view numbers, with Showtime indicating that it is going to be within reach of breaking the domestic record of 4.6 million buys set by Mayweather Vs McGregor.
One record that won’t be broken however is at the gate, with Mayweather Vs McGregor finally being pegged at $55,000,000 – still a huge figure, but not close to the $72,000,000 set by Mayweather Vs Pacquiao, with overpriced tickets being blamed for the fact the event in Las Vegas wasn’t at full capacity, despite the massive amount of interest in the historic clash of champions.
