Frankie Edgar has been forced out of his UFC 218 title fight with current featherweight champion Max Holloway in Detroit on December 2nd after suffering a facial injury.
“Hit with a minor setback but should be back to full contact in six weeks or so,” Edgar wrote on Twitter after the news broke. “Thanks to the @ufc for always having my back. Max I’ll see you down the road. #Believe”
Meanwhile, Holloway has made it clear he still intends to defend his title at the event against a different opponent.
“Detroit, you guys are a bunch of tough mfers,” Holloway wrote on social media. “I met many of you last month when we visited. You guys deserve the best fight card of the year and youre still gonna get it. I’m fighting no matter what
UFC officials also appear to be thinking along the same lines and are currently seeking an alternative title challenger to keep Holloway at the top of the bill.
There are already a number of fighters who have thrown their hat into the ring as potential replacements for Edgar, so it shouldn’t be too hard to put together a compelling match-up.
They include all three of the other top four contenders in the division, with Jose Aldo, Ricardo Lamas and Cub Swanson all having issued messages on social media calling for the UFC to give them the opportunity to fight for the title in Detroit.
