Following last night’s UFC 218 event in Detroit the recipients of the evenings $50,000 bonus awards were announced.
In a break from tradition, on this occasion there were simply two ‘Fight Of The Night’ awards thanks to a couple of all-out wars on the card that will now also be in the running for ‘Fight Of The Year’ status.
The first, Eddie Alvarez Vs Justin Gaethje came as no surprise to anyone given that it had been hotly tipped to win the award pre-fight due to their all-action styles.
Nevertheless, it was still remarkable to see their heart, toughness and will to win as they slugged it out for the best part of three rounds and both took significant damage, right up until Alvarez suddenly launched a knee to the head of Gaethje that collapsed him to the canvas and set up an impressive TKO finish for the former champion.
Earlier in the evening, Yancy Medeiros and Alex Oliveira had also opted to leave it all in the cage as they went to battle in another hard-hitting encounter in which both were dropped by big shots early and looked to be on the verge of gassing out, yet continued to go all-out on the attack on the feet and the mat until mid-way through the final round Medeiros finally took the fight out of ‘Cowboy’ with a sustained series of strikes that sunk him to the mat and soon led to the TKO stoppage.
