Bellator 192 went head-to-head with UFC 220 last night and we’ve got all the results for you below.
In the main event of the evening, Bellator’s 2018 heavyweight grand-prix kicked off with a win for Chael Sonnen over Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson.
‘Rampage’ was a whopping 31 pounds bigger than former middleweight Sonnen, but he couldn’t make it work to his advantage and instead looked somewhat labored throughout the fight.
In the opening round ‘Rampage’ did slam Sonnen and edged the striking, but he didn’t have Sonnen in any real trouble, and in the round sthat followed ‘The American Gangster’ was able to use his superior wrestling to take the former UFC light-heavyweight champion down and control him on the mat, leading to a unanimous decision victory on the scorecoards (29-28 x3).
In the co-main event another ex-UFC star Rory MacDonald finally got his hands on a belt after defeating Douglas Lima by unanimous decision to win Bellator’s welterweight title.
It proved to be a hard night’s work for MacDonald though, with Lima giving him one of his toughest fights to date.
In the opening round the two fighters slowly worked their way into the striking contest and then MacDonald managed to land a takedown, though he operated cautiously from on top.
There wasn’t much to seperate the two in the second round, with Lima landing leg kicks and managing to bloody ‘The Red King’s nose, while MacDonald operated behind the jab, tried to work from the clinch and had his opponent down for a brief moment late in the stanza.
Lima made a big impact with leg kicks in the third round, with one badly hurting MacDonald, sending him to the canvas and leaving his shin swelling up in an alarming fashion. Lima looked to put him away, but wasnt able too, though adding to MacDonald’s misery was the fact that his nose now appeared to have been rebroken.
MacDonald tried his best to get the fight to the floor in the fourth round, but Lima ended up on top and moved to mount. However, he was eventually able to improve his position and work for a stand-up, then later got Lima down and landed some solid ground-and-pound elbows.
In the final round MacDonald dug deep and was able to land a crucial takedown and then leave Lima’s face bloodied up with more ground-and-pound to close out the fight in the ascendancy, and that helped him seal a unanimous decision verdict on the judges scorecards (49-47, 49-45, 49-46).
Earlier, Michael Chandler grinded his way to a comfortable unanimous decision win over Michael Chandler, while blue-chip prospect Aaron Pico made another big impression by KO’ing Shane Kruchten with a left hook to the liver in just 37 seconds.
