Floyd Mayweather has been hyping up a potential crossover to MMA for a rematch with Conor McGregor recently, but as many suspected it seems he has no plans to actually go ahead with it.
“Just saw Floyd Mayweather as I was walking backstage [at the NBA All Star Game] and asked him if he’s serious about a rematch with [McGregor] in MMA: “I already fought Conor, and we’re at a basketball game, not an MMA match,” MMA reporter Mike Bohn noted on Twitter at the weekend.
McGregor has quickly responded to that on social media, and doesn’t appear to be too broken-hearted that his dream of fighting Mayweather in the cage won’t be happening, though he did still manage to get in a few verbal jabs at his rival’s expense.
“I am happy for Floyd and his recent announcement that he is out of these current fight negotiations,” McGregor wrote on Instagram.
“It is the reason I never seeked the rematch in the first place. I was happy for him in retirement.
“My game is a very unforgiving one. It is not like other games. I understand completely him staying retired. I will now carry on in my negotiations and see where it goes.
“Have a great retirement Junior. Now come here and give your old man a hug for old times sake. I’m proud of you son. Yours truly, Senior.”
